So for instance if I lose a game where on average I needed 4.5 cards for a set I don't lose as many rank points as if I got sets at 3.4 cards.

This is needed because games are often decided by when players get sets. High ranked players can spend hours and days improving our rank only to lose it all when we couldn't get a set until five cards. If losses were cushioned in the event of a high average card set number it would mitigate the effects of luck on the ranking of players.

I just played a game where three times in a row I didn't have a set at four cards. And I still won! I deserve double or triple rank points.
