Parker Brothers , then Milton Bradley, then Hasbro sanctioned the International Risk Tournament of Champions from 1989-2008 (some info can be found on Wayback Machine Internet archives
such as
https://web.archive.org/web/20071111161328/http://www.risktoc.org/
(archives have some dates mixed up but still lots of information on the tourney )
Was a three day tournament with Food (breakfast & dinner) , Beer, Beverages, entertainment after rounds were completed for the day, expensive one-of-a kind prizes for all six finalists (including cash). Hasbro was more concerned with their interactive games rather than supporting
the tournament which brought them yearly AP coverage including former ESPN coverage.
Hasbro didn't care that it was a successful event for 20 years, then it stopped
for lack of monetary contributions by corporate to keep up with its growing numbers.
Others that played in the tournament tried to run their own unapproved version
of the event, and it folded after only 2 years. I believe they named that the World
Risk Championship.
In any case, the IRTOC event hailed contestants from as far away as British Columbia Canada,
Europe, South & Central America, & was lots & lots of fun.
