Why does Manual Rolling provide different results to Balanced Blitz?

Anyone know why manual rolling skews the results of battles? And why it's different from just using balanced blitz? Surely, the outcome should be the same?
I get really frustrated with players manual rolling and winning battles they ordinarily shouldn't. Surely it's a flaw in the software. What am I missing here?
