Do you lose (come last) when you surrender under all circumstances?

If you exit this game you will lose. Thats the message the developers have chosen to display when you decide to surrender. There is no ambiguity to the word 'lose' - it has a definitive meaning - to come last. It never means 'to not win'. Have the developers made a monumental error in their wording here? I have heard rumours that surrendering in second place will keep your second place points. Whats the truth, and will the developers re-word that phrase if its incorrect?
